Audi tenebras inter cortices

A genealogy of black metal, from the heavy metal, punk and occult rock it grew out of to the scenes still burning today.

Founding years and countries were checked against public records (Wikipedia, Last.fm and similar databases), since Encyclopaedia Metallum could not be reached directly here. Three bands have no confidently documented year and are marked unknown rather than guessed. The connecting lines mix two things: a band's own documented account of its influences, and curatorial judgment where no such record exists, following shared scene, chronology or family resemblance in sound. Every thick line has a source behind it: hover or tap the small ring on it. This is an interpretive map, not a final verdict, and it will be corrected as better documentation turns up.
